The Original Story

Here are scanned versions of the original magazine. Our group spent a portion of the afternoon flipping through the collections of magazines available. We chose our story based on its intention to delight and instruct. This one is specifically aimed at boys. Unique to its design are naval images, military stories, adventure tales, and messages for building the moral fiber of their young readers. This is just one example of juvenile literature produced by Britain in the 1800's.

The table of contents features stories like "Faith and Hope," "Saved by a Bible," "A Boy's Prayer for the New Year," which makes the religious slant of the magazine clear. They aimed to infuse their readership with morals for building character and a healthy fear of God.

Various drawings grace the pages in between the text. They lend insight into the style of dress representative of this time period.
